The Matcha House has been teaching Matcha tea nutrition and its many health benefits through its workshops and other activities since 2009. Now we are facing the global problem of coronavirus and we think it is time to talk about it again. We wish that many people discover this information and take advantage of it as a countermeasure of the virus.
1. Antibacterial and bactericidal effects 抗菌 ・ 殺菌効果
Food-poisoning bacteria can be broadly divided into two types: the "toxin type," which is caused by ingesting toxins produced by bacteria attached to food; and the "infectious type", where bacteria attached to food attach directly to the intestinal tract and become infected. Catechin has a detoxifying effect against toxin-type bacteria, and a detoxifying effect against infectious-type bacteria, a bactericidal action against bacterial cell membranes, and is very effective in preventing food poisoning. Enterohemorrhagic O157 has been shown to have a bactericidal and a detoxifying (antitoxin) effect on the verotoxin produced. Catechin has also been shown to be effective against antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), bacteria that cause mycoplasma pneumonia and Trichophyton, the causative agent of athlete's foot.
2. Improve immunity 免疫力を整える
The catechin that green tea (epigallocatechin) has the function of activating macrophages of immune cells in the body. These are cells that have the function of eliminating bacteria that have entered the body, and the activation of macrophages leads to an increase in immunity. Matcha tea strengthens the immune system, increasing its response capacity against microbes and bacteria.
3. Antiviral effect 抗ウィルス効果
Catechin is effective against viruses and bacteria. Viruses, unlike bacteria, do not multiply on their own, but bind to and multiply in specific cells. The virus has a bump, and beyond that there is a joint that attaches to the cell. Each bump has a unique mark depending on the virus. In general, vaccine prevention involves producing a viral antibody in the body and preventing the antibody from trapping the spine marks and attaching itself to the cells. Therefore, for example, influenza (disease) has multiple influenza viruses with different types of brands, and it is not possible to prevent the transmission of influenza viruses that do not match the antibodies produced by the vaccine. On the other hand, the effect of catechin in the prevention of virus infection can be exerted independently of the type of virus since it blocks the joint.
4. Antioxidant action 抗酸化作用
Humans have a protective function in which an enzyme (SOD (*)) removes active oxygen (oxygen poison) when it increases too much. However, in middle age after 40 years, this activity begins to decrease and the ability to handle excessively generated active oxygen decreases. Excessive reactive oxygen can damage tissue cells, cause a variety of diseases, and accelerate aging. Therefore, it is important to eat foods that actively remove active oxygen and to make efforts to minimize the generation of active oxygen as much as possible. There are many substances that remove active oxygen (SOD-like active substances) in nature, but among them, "green tea" has a remarkably high effect even compared to components extracted from various natural foods. Beta-carotene / vitamin E and vitamin C are known as vitamins that remove active oxygen, but tea also contains many of these antioxidant vitamins, and one of the examples is that "it is an oxidized drink, Matcha has one of the highest ORAC scores ** of all "superfoods." ORAC is a method for measuring antioxidant capacity, in which Matcha has been rated above Acai berries and well above blueberries. 19% of the recommended amount of antioxidants in a person's daily diet is found in 3gr of matcha.
* SOD: Superoxide dismutase
** ORAC: Oxygen radical absorption capacity
5. Relaxing effect and stress relief リ ラ ッ ク ス 効果 / ス ト レ ス 解 消
Matcha tea contains L-theanine which is an amino acid. L-theanine promotes the production of alpha waves in the brain that induces relaxation and relieves stress. Matcha contains ten times more L-theanine than regular green tea.
6. Improve concentration 集中力を高める
The L-theanine that Matcha tea contains increases concentration and memory. It also increases energy and endurance levels. For more than 800 years, Matcha Tea has been used by Japanese Buddhist monks as a means of relaxation and meditation.
7. Prevent skin problems 美肌効果
Matcha is rich in several vitamins, but above all it contains vitamin C, which helps to produce collagen, and vitamin B, which helps prevent skin problems.
Matcha tea vitamins:
vitamin A: three times more than carrot
vitamin B1: five times more than spinach
vitamin B2: seven times more than spinach
vitamin C: four times more than avocado
vitamin E: nine times more than avocado
8. Intestinal action 整腸作用
Matcha contains approximately 30% "insoluble dietary fiber" from green tea that is hardly soluble in water, which can be assumed to eliminate or prevent constipation. It also contains around 6% water soluble dietary fiber, which works to slow down the absorption of sugar and is easily soluble in water. In addition, Matcha tea is a natural diuretic. The chlorophyll that Matcha tea possesses also works for detoxification. The power to absorb impurities and harmful substances is strong.
9. Diabetes prevention 糖尿病予防
Polysaccharides increase blood sugar levels and prevent the development of diabetes.
10. Prevention of bad breath by cavity 虫歯口臭予防
Polyphenols prevent the growth of bacteria in the mouth. Flavonoids prevent bad breath.

Why is Matcha better than other types of green tea? なぜ抹茶が良いの?
When you brew a cup of normal green tea, you throw away valuable nutrients that green tea has. Because from the tea you can take only 25% of the nutients that Green Tea has. This 75% contains valuable nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, protein, β-carotene, minerals, chlorophyll, dietary fiber, etc. To the contrary, in case of Matcha tea, you can consume the entire leaf and you can absorb all the properties of green tea.
What is the best way to drink Matcha to fight the virus? 効果的な飲み方とは?
The best way to drink Matcha is to drink a small amount diligently. In Japan, "Chibi Chibi Nomi" is recommended to prevent colds and flu. "Chibi Chibi Nomi" means drinking little amount of green tea or water very often diligently. After drinking it, Matcha's active ingredients like catechin disappear from the blood within a few hours. It is more effective to drink Matcha tea from 80 to 100ml five or six times a day after meals or snacks, etc. If you don't have time to prepare and drink Matcha, it is recommended to start the day with breakfast together with a glass of Matcha tea at 10:00 and in the afternoon have another type of Japanese green tea like Sencha that is easier to prepare. Both Matcha and Sencha contain caffeine, so be careful not to drink too much before going to sleep.
