Matcha Day - 6th February

 MATCHA DAY - 6TH FEBRUARY

Today 6th February is Matcha Day in Japan.

"Matcha Day" was created in 1992 in Japan. It was established by the "Nishio City Tea Industry Promotion Council" in Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture.

Nishio is a famous and important Matcha producing area in Japan. In Nishio, high quality Matcha is produced and "Nishio Matcha" is certified as a "regional brand" by the Japan Patent Office. The Matcha products of The Matcha House is also manufactured in Nishio.  The "Matcha Day" was established to let people know more about "Nishio Matcha".

So why is it February 6th? It is derived from the tea utensils used in the tea ceremony.

Various tools are used in the tea ceremony, and one of them is the "風炉 Fu-ro". This is a kind of brazier, in which ash and charcoal are put, and a tea pot is placed on top to boil water. It is an indispensable tool for this tea ceremony.  In Japanese the number 2 is sometimes read as "fu" and number 6 is sometimes read as "ro". With the wordplay, "fu (2) ro (6)" → we can remember February 6th as a memorial day.
